Lifetime Measurements at Nuclear Forefront

The present two-day IoP meeting on 12th and 13th of February 2026 at the University of the West of Scotland, Paisley, focuses on the recent developments in the charge plunge technique for lifetime measurements at MARA and the scope for implementation of the technique elsewhere. The method was developed in the 1970s; however, it has not been sufficiently exploited as a practical method for lifetime measurements of the excited states in nuclei that decay via the conversion process until after 2019, when it was revived at JYFL. The meeting aims at paving the way towards extending possibilities to study various nuclear phenomena, including shapes of nuclei and stability of superheavy nuclei, by combining the charge plunger technique with the fast timing, standard plunger and inelastic scattering methods. The discussions will be particularly focused on the studies of level structures and electromagnetic matrix elements in exotic nuclei by employing these techniques. In addition, discussion on the applicability of the techniques to fields such as the medical industry will be Welcome.

A few invited presentations are planned covering measurements and calculations of electromagnetic transition strengths and lifetimes of nuclear levels. Early career PhD/PDRA participants will be able to present their work and meet some of the experts in the field.
