This train the trainer course provides an understanding and awareness in the subject of ligature and ligature reduction protocol.

To attend this course you will need a minimum of the one day Emergency First Aid at Work or Basic Life Support training.


Course Overview
This one-day Train the Trainer course gives you the knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver in-house Ligature Awareness & Protocol training. You’ll learn how to recognise risks, carry out environmental assessments, spot potential ligature points and safely manage incidents, including the correct use of ligature cutters.

What the Course Covers

  • Understanding ligatures, risks and terminology
  • Environmental risk assessment and risk-reduction strategies
  • Identifying ligature points and potential materials
  • Safe use, storage and disposal of ligature cutters
  • Responding to self-ligature incidents and performing emergency procedures/BLS
  • How to deliver both theory and practical elements of ligature protocol training
  • Scenario-based practice and trainer assessment

Who Is It For?
Suitable for children’s homes, foster carers, mental health, social care, healthcare, and substance misuse services — or anyone supporting individuals at risk of self-harm or suicide.
Learners must hold an in-date First Aid qualification.

Key Learning Outcomes
By the end of the day, you will be able to:

  • Carry out ligature risk assessments and implement prevention strategies
  • Recognise signs, symptoms and risks relating to ligature incidents
  • Follow correct policies, procedures and emergency protocols
  • Deliver effective in-house Ligature Awareness & Protocol training to staff teams
