‘Like As the Lute Delights’ Lecture by Roxana Gundry
Event Information
Description
Now Divine aire, is his soul ravisht, is it not strange that sheepes guts should hale souls out of mens bodies?
(Much Ado About Nothing)
In Roxana Gundry’s programme Like As the Lute Delights, she will play various lutes, from medieval times to the Baroque. Alongside the music she will discuss the history of the lute and talk about the iconography of the various instruments, showing contemporary images and introducing some of the poetry dedicated to the lute.
Who did write Greensleeves? Maybe it was not Henry VIII, but he did indeed compose music and encouraged his children to learn the lute. What is a theorbo, and is a mandolino the same as a mandolin?
Roxana started her musical career as a singer, studying with Dorothy Stanton at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She was drawn to early music and studied the lute with pioneering lutenist Diana Poulton. As well as solo lute playing, Roxana very much enjoys playing continuo on the theorbo (the largest of the lutes) and she plays regularly with different early music ensembles in England and abroad. Recently she has given performances in Oslo, South East France, Pretoria (South Africa) Slovakia,Venice, Sydney, Australia and Armidale, NSW.
