Event description
One-day conference to learn how Limerick and others are creating high quality, yet attainable, living environments

About this Event

The success of our cities has become central to national economies and culture. They drive investment, tourism and migration – the young, the educated, the creative and the rich are being drawn to live and work in urban areas once again.

As we have seen with Aarhus, Marseille and Rotterdam, the transformation of mid-level European cities is providing space for new ideas, enterprise, investment and even building types. But can growth and expansion provide an economy and wellbeing whilst also retaining a distinctive identity?

Where better to explore this than in Limerick, one of Ireland’s maritime cities on the Atlantic rim of Europe. Once the staging post for European emigration to the US, it now sees people and investment flow in the other direction.

Limerick is one of the five cities forming part of the Government’s Ireland 2040 national planning Policy initiative. It has been an exemplar in implementing new city governance structures to advance regional growth as a counterbalance to the continuing growth of the greater Dublin Region.

Through a combination of cycling and walking tours, plenary and breakout sessions, panel discussions and speakers drawn from across Europe and beyond, we will learn how Limerick and others are creating high quality, yet attainable, living environments and in particular how they are addressing the affordable housing crisis.

The conference is a one-day event. We will explore topics such as the changing role of the public sector as an affordable housing provider, different community-led housing models, or the ways of achieving affordability through innovative design solutions. We will hear about and discuss the applicability of the various regulatory and policy mechanisms, new financial and partnership models used around the world to secure delivery of affordable housing as a key component of great placemaking.

On Thursday afternoon, 5th February, in advance of the conference there will be an optional city bus tour, provided by Limerick City Council, Through a combination of this tour, plenary and breakout sessions, panel discussions and speakers drawn from across Europe, we will learn how Limerick and others are creating high quality, yet attainable, living environments and in particular how they are addressing the affordable housing crisis.
