Event Details

Many of us are attracted by the idea of working in different countries. Equally, many organisations prize staff who can adapt to and work across cultures. However, making a successful transition to a new country is never simple.

Those who make these changes work develop particular skills and strategies which allow them to integrate themselves in a new country.  Linda Brimm, Emeritus Professor of Organisational Behaviour at INSEAD, examines how successful "global cosmopolitans" operate and what we can learn from them.

Managing big decisions
Creating a new life in a new country involves huge uncertainty and upheaval. Understanding the demands of different stages in the process can make these jumps more manageable. We will examine:

  • Approaches to dealing with the complexity involved in moving country

  • How it helps to deconstruct and prioritise issues and concerns

  • Methods of creating options and solutions and reaching a committed decision.

Adapting successfully
Those who make successful transitions rely on a cluster of skills. We will examine some of the ways global cosmopolitans have learnt to thrive, in particular:

  • Dealing creatively with uncertainty and seeing change as normal

  • How global cosmopolitans learn the “rules” of a new culture quickly

  • How “kaleidoscope thinking” which mixes insider and outsider perspectives helps to diagnose and negotiate cultural difference

  • The necessity of taking calculated risks when integrating into a new culture

  • Why crafting an identity story that is flexible enough to integrate past and future can help

Long-term implications
We will also look at some of the longer-term implications of an internationally-mobile life and how these develop over time with family responsibilities.
