Summary

This event looks at two popular and topical organisational themes – the role of line managers and employee health and wellbeing. We will explore how the role of line managers has changed and how important it is for employers, employees and organisations to ensure that their line managers understand how their own wellbeing and the wellbeing of their direct reports can have an impact on organisational outcomes. The session will include both IES input and group discussions.

Background

‘Join an organisation, leave a manager’. Does this resonate with you or experiences at your organisation? Employees are often seen as an ‘organisation’s greatest asset’ and in these uncertain times it is more important than ever to be able to attract, retain and develop employees. Thus, it seems more important than ever that ‘good management’ to drive growth, and both engage and draw out the talent of their workforce. But, at a time when line managers are undertaking more devolved HR roles and being ‘squeezed’ by both their direct reports and senior management, how does this have implications for how much time line managers can spend ensuring their health and wellbeing and the health and wellbeing of their direct reports are maintained. What can HR do to help and support line managers and what best practice can be encouraged to improve employee health and wellbeing?

There will be an opportunity to learn about and hear up to date research on the importance of line management, health and wellbeing and how these topics both separately and combined can be beneficial for employee and organisational outcomes. There will also be the chance to see and hear about the latest IES research in this area. The event provides a great opportunity for networking and learning from other organisations.

Facilitators

Zofia Bajorek, Research Fellow

Zofia joined IES as a Research Fellow in June 2018. Her main interests include the role of line managers and the development of the employment relationship, the management of the psychological contract, the temporary and flexible workforce, and the health and wellbeing of the workforce, including the promotion of good work practices.

Prior to joining IES, Zofia was the lead researcher in HR and Management at the Work Foundation, where she worked on a number of projects related to a range of workforce issues, including systematic reviews for workplace policy and management practices to improve the health of employees, the health and wellbeing of the ageing workforce and performance-related pay in the public sector. Zofia has also undertaken a mixed-method study to understand the role of employee engagement in the NHS for staff and patient outcomes, and contributed to a number of policy papers providing recommendations to improve the health and wellbeing of the workforce.

Zofia completed a PhD in management studies at King’s College London, focusing on the management of temporary staff in the accident and emergency department, and the impact this can have on patient safety and service quality, which included two distinct case studies involving interviewing hospital staff at the macro, meso and micro level.

She has since used a range qualitative skills to explore how employers and employees can manage long-term chronic conditions at work (eg inflammatory bowel disease) and the role of self-management for chronic conditions. Zofia also has an interest in gender equality in the workplace and has undertaken in-depth qualititative research looking at the under-application of women to Queen’s Counsel (QC) status. Zofia is also interested in understanding the future of the workplace and discussing workforce trends, and has recently published a book based looking at the future of the workforce and workplace.

Sally Wilson, Senior Research Fellow

Sally has more than fifteen years’ experience of applied research in health and wellbeing and currently leads on this area of policy research at IES. Her work spans occupational health and safety, stress and mental health, as well as chronic illness and disability. Sally has a particular interest in workplace mental wellbeing, including interventions to manage workplace stressors, as well as measures to help people return and re-enter work who have lived experience of mental health conditions. More broadly her expertise also extends to quality of work, work-life balance and working while caring. She recently project managed a large evaluation for the Social Care Institute for Excellence looking at local interventions to support carers in employment.

At a more local level, Sally worked with a London Borough to evaluate a health mentoring and referral scheme for young people, delivered in a youth centre setting. Currently she is leading an evaluation of Mind's Workplace Wellbeing Index for employers and advising on the remit of a Public Health England project on worklessness.

Before joining IES she worked at the Health and Safety Laboratory (part of the Health and Safety Executive) and at the Sheffield Institute for Studies on Ageing, as well as the Age and Cognitive Performance Research Centre at the University of Manchester.

Megan Edwards, Senior Research Fellow

Megan Edwards joined IES in May 2017 shortly after completing an MSc in occupational psychology exploring the relationship between internal communication and employee engagement, using affect-based trust in a logic chain approach. This research involved design, administration and detailed analysis of an employee survey across three organisations.

Her current project work at IES includes a large-scale evaluation of a national pilot training programme involving multiple research methods, including; designing research questionnaires, semi-structured interviewing and observation of training delivery. Further project work includes employee survey analysis, using both qualitative and quantitative techniques to synthase data from over 7,000 respondents.

Megan’s qualitative research skills include structured and semi-structured interviewing; preparation of discussion guides; the design of research questionnaires; and report-writing. Quantitative research techniques include the statistical analysis and interpretation of questionnaire data using SPSS.
