About this event

Lineworks: Weekly Poetry Workshop

A weekly writing workshop for anyone wanting to deepen their creative thinking and explore what poetry can do. Open to all levels.

What to Expect

Each session focuses on a core poetic element—image, line, tone, metaphor, and more—through writing exercises, group reading, and honest, supportive feedback.

You’ll get a broad overview of essential techniques and approaches. It’s not about mastering everything at once, but sparking new awareness—so you leave with more tools, sharper instincts, and a deeper sense of what your writing can do.

Atmosphere

Relaxed, focused, and welcoming. No egos, no pressure, just a space to explore and develop your writing with others.

Venue & Access

The workshop is currently set to take place at Hanover Community Centre, just past The Geese and The Greys Freehouse pubs, up Southover Street—steep hill alert!

The workshop room is a cosy space on the first floor, accessible by stairs only (no lift).

Depending on other bookings in the centre, access to the room may vary—arrive a few minutes early, and I’ll met you at the main entrance and shown the way.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do I need prior experience in poetry to join?

Not at all. Everyone’s welcome. If you’re new, great! You might bring fresh eyes. And if you’ve written before, there’s still more to uncover.

2. How long is each session?

Roughly 1 hour 45 minutes, with a short break to stretch and recharge.

3. What should I bring?

Whatever you like to write with—pen and notebook, laptop, stone tablet. That said, paper and pens will be there if you forget.

4. What if I miss a session? Can I catch up?

Yes. Each session stands on its own, even if there’s a through-line. And if you miss one, the materials can always be provided to help you dive back in.

5. How many people will be in the group?

It’s a small group max 10 people. Enough for variety, but still personal.

6. Will there be homework or take-home prompts?

Yes, but it’s not homework. Think of it as invitations to write and think between sessions—totally optional.

7. Can I share my poems aloud? What about feedback?

Yes! Sharing is always encouraged but never forced. Feedback is honest and kind—meant to build you up, not knock you down.

8. What styles and content will we cover? Will we study other poets?

We’ll explore different styles and techniques, focusing on writing first, but also we’ll look into poems by others to see how they work and maybe borrow some tricks.
