This is a Linnean Lens event.

Using nothing more than his little, single-lens microscope, the Scottish Victorian physician Robert Brown made a series of crucial discoveries that live with us today. We know him from Brownian Motion, but he is also the person who named the cell nucleus, and who discovered the fine details of fertilisation in the conifers - an extraordinarily difficult demonstration. Our honorary fellow Professor Brian J Ford has reprised Brown's discoveries, and today he shows us how such astonishing revelations were possible with such simple equipment.

Brian J. Ford is a distinguished British scientist, author, and broadcaster specializing in biology and microscopy. Elected a fellow of the Linnean Society of London in 1980, he served as Zoological Secretary and council member, and has been Honorary Surveyor of Scientific Instruments since 1985. In 2021, he was named an Honorary Fellow of the Linnean Society for his significant contributions to natural history. Ford has authored over 30 books, including The Revealing Lens and Single Lens, Story of the Simple Microscope and is a Fellow of Cardiff University and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society.
