This is a Linnean Lens event.

In 1729, at the age of 22, the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus produced a little notebook which he entitled ‘Spolia Botanica’, and which classifies plants that he collected in three different regions of Sweden according to three different naturalists. This Linnean Lens will showcase this delightful little manuscript, which currently features in the exhibition Naturalists Notebooks. Isabelle Charmantier will delve into its history and look at its meaning in the life of the young naturalist, before Linnaeus shot to fame.

Isabelle Charmantier is Head of Collections at the Linnean Society. After a post-doc at the University of Exeter working on Carl Linnaeus’ writing technologies, she retrained as an archivist and in 2013-2015 catalogued the Linnean Society’s Linnaean manuscripts. Apart from an 18-month stint as Collections Manager at the Freshwater Biological Association on Windermere, Isabelle has worked at the Linnean Society ever since.
