Programme:

A day class suitable for those with some initial linocut experience looking to expand their knowledge & technique while enjoying the social scenario of a group workshop.

The class is suitable age 10 upwards, age 10-16 should be accompanied by an adult.

Students can expect to complete a small project or series of prints based on new techniques. Students will see demonstrations and examples for advanced lino print techniques: jigsaw style print, multi block (multi colour) print, lining up (registration) using collage papers, chine collection technique – larger scale printing (A4 or larger), printing on fabric.

Students can if they prefer - set themselves a project by discussing with the tutor beforehand. Examples might be printing a fabric scarf, printing an A3 size multi block print. Alternatively – students can arrive on the day with an open mind to see which demonstrations and new techniques they would like to experiment with.

There will be a lunch break giving students a chance to enjoy The Café at Reader.

Students will have their own equipment on the day (which is sanitised) Alternatively, they can bring their own if they’d prefer – or can buy a kit from Catherine directly. There will be materials and equipment on the day to purchase such as inks and papers.

The class is mostly taught by ‘hand press’ method however, students will have the opportunity to print with 2 different types of press (a roller and a vertical press). Catherine has over 20 colours of printing ink for students to choose from, different print base lino materials, different tools and blades to try, a selection of different rollers and papers.

Course Plan:

11-11.30 – introductions, brief discussion of mid level technique lino printing, a short warm up sketch exercise and a mark making exercise. As a mid level class, students should be finding new marks & building on existing technique.

11.30 – 12.00 – practice & experimental cutting exercise and test printing in black. (Catherine gives full demonstrations) Students here have chance to prepare some colour bases to print onto later.

12.00 – 12:30pm – break (chance for food and drinks in the café) The classroom remains open for students to lunch or to carry on working.

Following lunch, the agenda is fairly open and students can freely use the space as they wish – otherwise a suggested agenda as follows:

12:30 – 1:30pm – planning a project (Catherine will demo various techniques as listed above) Students will sketch out design ideas & discuss with Catherine a best approach.

1:30-4:45 – cutting plates and printing – as appropriate for each student.

Students will need to bring:

1) Pen/paper for notes

2) Apron/old shirt

3) Something to take work home in – A4 size minimum. Bring cardboard and A4 sheet to place work between to protect. Printing inks can take a week to fully dry.

4) A creative temperament! Looking at lino print inspiration ahead of the class is useful.

Catherine will provide the remaining materials (materials included in the price of tickets).
