Event description

Description

Learn and explore the basics of working with lino on this one day workshop. Lino is a relief printing process. The printing plate can be made from traditional hessian backed flooring lino or a polymer based block. We will use an easy cut substitute which is softer and easier to use. You will be shown how to safely cut and chisel an image or pattern from the lino using specialist tools that we will supply for the day. You will be shown how to ink up and print the lino using a printing press and also simple but very effective methods that can be continued at home without a press. If you enjoy the process there will be tools, lino and inks available for you to buy cheaply at the end of the course to continue with at home.

What experience do I need?

The course is suitable for absolute beginners. Lino printing is a simple way for you to be introduced to printmaking. You’ll learn about inks, paper, rollers and various printing techniques using presses and hand techniques.
If you have an established artistic practice you can develop images in new ways. Don’t have any expectations and you may be surprised at the results you achieve!

What will I make?

You will cut at least one A5 printing plate that can be printed on A4 paper in a number of colours or “editioned” in a series of identical prints. If you want to try more plates they are available to purchase from us.

Who is my tutor?

Mick Welbourn is currently the manager of the printmaking workshops of Leeds College of Art, where he has worked for more than twenty years. Mick was a participant in the Jerwood Drawing Prize exhibition in 2011. In 2013 he finished his MFA at Leeds University where he was the recipient of the Wilhelmina Barnes Graham Printmaking Scholarship. Mick is one of the founding committee members of Leeds Print Workshop, and is excited to create a space for art alumni across Leeds to make work after graduation.

Do I need to bring anything?

We will provide basic materials including an A5 lino piece, some cartridge papers and a variety of colours of oil based inks. The workshop also sells a range of different printmaking papers if you wish to try something different. Prices range from £1 to £2.20 per sheet.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no later than 7 days before the workshop. For cancellations after this period there will be no refunds issued.
