Event description

Description

Learn and explore the basics of working with lino on this one day workshop. Lino is a relief printing process. The printing plate can be made from traditional hessian backed flooring lino or a polymer based block. We will use an easy cut lino which is softer and easier to use. You will be shown how to safely cut and chisel an image or pattern from the lino using specialist cutting tools. You will be shown how to ink up and print the lino using our Albion press and also some simple but effective methods that can be continued at home without a press.

What experience do I need?

The course is suitable for absolute beginners. Lino printing is a simple way for you to be introduced to printmaking. You’ll learn about inks, paper, rollers and various printing techniques using presses and hand techniques.
If you have an established artistic practice you can develop images in new ways. Don’t have any expectations and you may be surprised at the results you achieve!

What will I make?

You will cut at least one A5 printing plate that can be printed on A4 paper using oil based inks in a number of colours or “editioned” in a series of identical prints.

Who is my tutor?

Susie Rumsby is a Printmaking Instructor at Leeds College of Art, where she introduces students to screen print, etching, linocut, monoprint and bookbinding. Before coming to teach art in Leeds, Susie studied printmaking in Portland, Oregon, where she also worked as a master printer’s apprentice, an artists’ assistant, and at Portland Art Museum helping to put on shows of prints and drawings. Susie is a founding committee member of Leeds Print Workshop, and believes in making the fun of printmaking open to as many people as possible.

Do I need to bring anything?

We will provide basic materials including two pieces of A5 soft cut lino, cartridge papers and a variety of colours of oil based inks. The workshop also sells a range of different printmaking papers if you wish to try something different. Prices range from £1 to £2.20 per sheet.

As part of the course fee you will also receive a wooden handled lino cutting kit and two pieces of A5 lino to take away so you can continue practising the skills you've learned at home. Extra pieces of lino are also available to purchase.

If I can't attend can I get a refund?

We will refund you in full if you cancel no less than 14 days before the start of the first session of the course, after which no refunds will be issued. Once booked, you cannot transfer to another course.

What if the course is cancelled?

We reserve the right to cancel the course for any reason (for example, insufficient bookings). We will endeavour to give at least 7 days notice if the course is cancelled and in the event of cancellation we will, of course, issue you a full refund.

Accessibility

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible but, due to the nature of the building, Leeds Print Workshop is not wheelchair accessible. There is a step up into the building and four steps down to the toilets, and no accessible toilet facilities. Should you have any questions, or wish to discuss accessibility before booking, please don't hesitate to email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org

Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
