Description

Listening with heart

This two day advanced listening and communication skills workshop will take place over two Fridays: Friday 9th and Friday 16th June 2017, both from 9:30 am - 4:30 pm.

About Compassionate Listening

Compassionate Listening enables us to harness collective wisdom and build powerful cultures of peace. Through a range of very practical communication skills, compassionate listening helps us listen deeply to others, which in turn enables those who are listened to to find new perspectives, healing and ways forward.

Compassionate Listening starts from the understanding that the deepest wisdom lies within each of us, and the process of compassionate listening enables the speaker to access their own truth and guidance.

As Rachel Naomi Remen put it - ‘when you listen generously to people, they can hear the truth in themselves, often for the first time.’

The core skills and practices taught by the Compassionate Listening Project reflect insights which lie at the heart of the world’s great traditions, both religious and secular. But while the insights are well known, they are not always easy to put in to practice, particularly in the heat of the moment. The tools and practices of compassionate listening enable us to remain centred, open and able to listen compassionately, even in the heat of conflict.

Compassionate listening enables us to live our interpersonal relationships well, as well as enabling us to be present to and listen to ourselves. It's also a key set of practices for professionals, particularly those working in intense situations, with conflict, or in the caring professions.

The training is intentionally delivered over two days, with a week in between, enabling participants to practice, reflect on and start to embed the skills in daily life, prior to returning for the second half of the training material.

About this workshop

Many of us are already good listeners… most of the time. However, we all have situations, contexts or particular people, where listening is more challenging. This two day workshop will introduce a range of techniques, with the opportunity to practice, as well as stimulating our awareness of our own judgements and triggers that get in the way of listening.

The workshop will introduce the five core practices developed by the Compassionate Listening Project:

• listening with the heart
• speaking from the heart
• cultivating compassion – towards yourself and others
• respecting yourself and others
• developing the ‘fair witness’

Workshop Overview

Day 1 – Friday 9th June – The Basics
Day 1 focuses on the core principles and skills that underpin Compassionate Listening including:

• What is Compassionate Listening
• Why and how to create a ‘safe container’
• Introducing the five core practices
• Being fully present – another way to listen
• Reflective listening – listening for facts, feelings and values
• The art of the deepening question

Day 2 – Friday 16
th June – When the going gets tough
