Event description

Description

The briefing will examine the UK regions as a new frontier for offshore energy production and discuss the second revolution for the North Sea basin and rest of the UK’s waters in harnessing green technology. The session will examine the prospects and future growth of one the UK’s most successful market segments, offshore energy & renewables.

The Government’s Clean Growth Strategy was launched in Autumn 2017 and this support has been further exemplified by the recent Sector Deal for Offshore wind. BEIS will outline their support for this industry and for innovative clean energy production.

The deal, which could see offshore wind contributing up to 30GW of generating capacity by 2030, will drive the transformation of offshore wind generation, making it integral to the UK energy mix and boost the productivity and competitiveness of the UK supply chain. Through capacity building the supply chain, from onshore planning to offshore development, the deal will boost the UK’s global leadership in offshore wind generation, enhance international competitiveness and assist UK companies to play a greater role.

What consequentially follows from offshore wind and the inevitable ullage created, are great opportunities which are just being considered but yet to be considered. Namely, free hydrogen production gas production. Whether in the repurposing of existing oil & gas installations or through new infrastructure, hydrolysing plants powered by surplus electricity from offshore renewables and with the sea as a feedstock, provide a clean, free and versatile fuel. The hydrogen economy is commonly listed as one sustainable panacea, enabling the shipping industry and other transport methods to operate on carbon-neutral synthetic fuels.

This seminar will detail the policy landscape, the market status quo & potential, the science, the business case and the engineering challenges hearing from a range of experts. This burgeoning sector will be showcased, and with considerable opportunity outlined for shipowners, ports, developers and companies in the supply chain to dramatically grow whilst decarbonising energy production in the UK in line or exceeding climate goals.
