Event description
Lancaster Literacy Research Centre are delighted to welcome Maighread Tobin to discuss Literacy and Society in Ireland 1900 - 1980.

About this Event

This Lancaster Literacy Research Centre event will be a talk from Maighread Tobin titled 'Literacy and Society in Ireland 1900 - 1980'.

Abstract:

This presentation addresses the paradox of using written material to search for evidence of illiteracy. My research aims to understand how authoritative ‘truths’ about illiteracy circulated in twentieth-century Ireland. The social constructionist contention that truth is constituted within social interaction underpins a focus on written interaction, leading to the analysis of documents located in publicly available archives. Foucault’s work on discourse, power, and knowledge provides the theoretical framework and informs the analytic approach. My presentation reviews the process of tracing the illiterate person through the Irish archives. It also invites discussion on the use of documentary data to research literacy and illiteracy.
