Event description
Understand the barriers to reading that many learners face and discover inclusive and accessible strategies for supporting early readers.

About this event

Driver Youth Trust are on a mission to equip teaching professionals with the skills, knowledge and confidence to better support learners with literacy difficulties, dyslexia and SEND.

Designed and delivered by our expert consultants, DYT's 'Literacy difficulties: supporting the teaching of reading in Key Stage 1' webinar will help you to understand the barriers (and their causes) to reading that many learners face and discover inclusive and accessible strategies for supporting literacy difficulties, dyslexia and/or SEND in Key Stage 1.

This session is ideal for teachers, SENCos and higher-level teaching assistants who work directly with learners with literacy difficulties, dyslexia and/or SEND. We would also recommend it for senior leaders looking to implement inclusive practice across their workforce.

Webinar overview:

  • The skills needed for reading: understanding what makes a 'successful reader' and the skills learners need to develop in Key Stage 1.
  • Barriers to reading: exploring the barriers to reading that learners with literacy difficulties, dyslexia and/or SEND experience.
  • Strategies, frameworks and tools: we will share a bank of reading development frameworks and strategies for supporting learners with barriers to literacy.

  • An understanding of why it's so important that pupils learn to read accurately and fluently in Key Stage 1.
  • An understanding of how developing reading and language skills in the early years impacts on future success.
  • Methods for breaking down and differentiating reading skills in order to provide targeted support for learners with literacy difficulties, dyslexia and/or SEND.
  • A bank of strategies for supporting Key Stage 1 learners who struggle with reading and making your lessons more inclusive and accessible for all learners.
