About this event

The UKLA and NEU are pleased to announce a third joint conference on Literacy in Primary Classrooms taking place on Saturday 13th September from 9:30am-4pm.

Come to find great ideas for teaching and learning and learn more about the ways current policy can be challenged through research and critique.

This year we are delighted to be joined by our key internationally renowned keynote speakers:

  • Jeffrey Boakye, ex-teacher turned writer, speaker, broadcaster and educator
  • Dr Ian Cushing and Professor Julia Snell, renowned academics working on linguistics and inequalities

There will be a variety of workshops from experienced teachers, academics and organisations on a range of topics, including:

  • Adaptive practice in the inclusive classroom, with Laura Lawrence. Deputy Head, Albright Education Centre
  • Unlocking phonological awareness in the early years with Neil Maslen and Emma Forrest (Speech and Language UK)
  • Writing is an art form! Creating opportunities for meaningful writing with Dr Darren Chetty
  • Building a Reading for Pleasure culture, with NEU member, Educate columnist Jon Biddle
  • Digital Literacy in the primary classroom: whose responsibility is it? with Sam Lovatt
  • Writing for pleasure: bringing purpose, authenticity and joy into the writing classroom - Felicity Ferguson (The Writing for Pleasure Centre)
  • Using Poetry to Navigate Still Waters and Stormy Seas with Rebecca Simpson-Hargreaves
  • Using social and talk-based approaches to support reading for pleasure in the EY and KS1 with Helen Hendry and Samantha Hulston
  • Teaching Reading Fluency for Teaching Assistants-with Nicole Gurvidi
  • Teaching for Comprehension: Developing a pedagogy which promotes formative assessment with diverse groups with Wayne Tennent
