This course will discover a selection of Spanish writers in the twentieth century, who were active after Franco came to power in 1936.

What will this course cover?

The course will cover the following texts: A Heart So White - Javier Marías; Homeland - Fernando Aramburu; Soldiers of Salamis - Javier Cercas; In Diamond Square - Mercè Rodoreda; The Beehive - Camilo Jose Cela.

What will I get out of this course?

The texts will be discussed in a supportive and creative environment, which will encourage you to develop critical thinking skills through close reading of each author and her novel. We shall place each author in the context of her historical period, and discuss the literary influences which shaped the text.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?

The course is suitable for all, those who have a familiarity with the subject and those who are coming to it for the first time.

What do I need to bring with me?

You don’t need any special equipment. You’re welcome to bring a pen and notebook if you’d like to take notes or jot down ideas.

Group sessions are led by a subject specialist via Teams video calls. The WEA approach to learning is inclusive and interactive, meaning there will be opportunities to take part in group discussions and share your own knowledge and opinions, should you wish to.

What do I need to bring to sessions?

You don't need any specialist equipment for this class. However, you might want to bring along a pen and paper to take notes.
