This course will explore a selection of women authors whose work was influenced by the First World War.

What will this course cover?

The writers and texts to be read and discussed are: The Return of the Soldier - Rebecca West. A Testament of Youth - Vera Brittain. The Selected Poems and Prose of Mary Borden. We will also discuss writers such as Rose Macaulay, Virginia Woolf, Agatha Christie and various poets.

What will I get out of this course?

The course will provide a comprehensive overview of women’s fiction and poetry as writers sought to respond to the Great War.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills or experience?

The course is suitable for all, including both those who have a familiarity with the subject and those who are coming to it for the first time.

What do I need to bring with me?

Apart from The Return of the Soldier by Rebecca West, all other texts will be studied through extracts provided online. You don't need any specialist equipment for this class. However, you might want to bring along a pen and paper to take notes.
