Event description
Come along and join either our litter pick or volunteer task day to help tidy up the area and start the improvements to the Sensory Garden.

About this event

As well as a litter pick, the FoRCE team are excited to start the process of creating the planned Sensory Garden in the three raised beds on the Esplanade. We will need volunteers throughout the day to help clear out the unwanted scrub and shrubbery areas, remove the debris and dig in compost before we embark on the planting a couple of weeks later.

We will need our volunteers to come along prepared! Those with their own trowels, spades and gloves will be most welcomed. As with the litter pick schedule, we will have two main timeslots to complete this work.

The Suffrage Sensory Garden has been planned for some time now and those of us at FoRCE can't wait to begin the work. Once completed, the carefully chosen flowers and plants will enhance the area and complement the other planting already carried out by the council. The Sensory Garden has been designed to pay tribute to Medway's own non-militant suffragette Vera Conway Gordon, who lived directly opposite the park and dedicated her life to supporting women's rights.

Under new COVID rules updated in April, groups of more than 6 are permissible if they are providing voluntary or charitable services and observe social distancing. Pre-registration is required. Tickets are limited, so please do only book if you know that you're going to come and, should your plans change, we'd be grateful if you could cancel your ticket so we can ensure as many volunteers are available on the day to make a difference to our lovely park.

Every volunteer will have the chance to choose whether they prefer to do gardening or litter picking. Of course, suitable clothing, including gloves and robust footwear should be worn on the day and volunteers are encouraged to check they have had a tetanus vaccination.
