Event description

Description

Join us for an unusual and imaginative family event in the beautiful surroundings of Huntstile Farm for a very special bedtime story - you're even welcome to wear pyjamas and bring your toothbrushes! We also recommend bringing cushions and blankets to snuggle under.

Thanks to Towards Tomorrow Together, award-winning multisensory musical theatre company Collar & Cuffs Co will be presenting a performance of 'Little Meerkat's Big Panic'. This tiny tale in the Kalahari explores a simple model for understanding what's going on in the brain and body when big feelings take hold, and then offers a range of low cost/no cost strategies for riding out waves of grief, anger, anxiety and even excitement in ways that build connection and attachment. Joyful, silly, uplifting and practical - expect to meet giant birds, butterflies, and lots and lots of meerkats!

Synopsis
It’s a big day in the Kalahari desert: it’s Little Meerkat’s first day on Lookout Duty. However, once she climbs the Lookout Tree she finds it all a bit overwhelming and falls asleep. When she wakes, all her meerkat friends and family are gone and a great big panic begins! With help from a Kind Elephant and a Wise Monkey can she learn to feel calmer and find those missing meerkats?

Suitability, Accessibility and Arrival Times
Suitable for children from birth and beyond, performances are Relaxed to support the inclusion of very young children and anyone with any form of special need, and are keyword signed in Makaton. Please arrive from 5.30pm for a 6pm start. Drinks and nibbles will be available.

How did this performance come about?
Collar & Cuffs Co are sisters Julia and Ellie Collar. Julia is a therapeutic performing arts specialist, and Ellie is an Early Years and Special Educational Needs consultant. Between them they have lost 5 babies in pregnancy. While this performance is most usually focused on supporting children with generalised anxiety, this special performance will be tweaked to offer specific support for families affected by the loss of a baby, especially their brothers and sisters.

Julia has been a follower of Mel Scott's work for many years and the opportunity to visit Somerset has happened as a result of a booking to perform at a festival in Plymouth. Julia and Mel have worked together to squeeze in this special event to catch the company as they travel past on their way further south.

Very generously, Huntstile Farm is allowing us to use their wonderful setting at a very reduced cost to create a private, quiet, and magical space for families to spend precious time together doing something a little bit different - it's not every night you get to visit the Kalahari on a Somerset farm!
