Little stories of nature and wellbeing

Saturday 11 November 2017, 13:15 - 16.00

Epiphany House, Kenwyn Church Road, Truro TR1 3DR

Event Information

As part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science this interactive workshop co-produced with Sensory Trust (a charity based in Cornwall), researchers from the University of Exeter will explore the importance of nature in the wellbeing of people with dementia and their carers. Many older people have limited opportunities to access the outdoors in their everyday lives. This is especially true for those with dementia, who may live at home or in residential or nursing care homes. Care workers can lack the confidence and time to be in nature with those they care for, often feeling they need special equipment, additional support or more time. As people are diagnosed, their social world can often retreat, resulting in them spending more time indoors and thereby increasing feelings of depression and anxiety. Evidence suggests that spending more time outdoors and connecting with nature can improve physical and mental health.

This event will present stories from University of Exeter researchers about wellbeing and the natural environment. It will also contain a number of nature based activities suitable for both indoors and outdoors, demonstrating how to put the research into practice. It will conclude with a panel discussion.

Speakers include social science academics with expertise in wellbeing, the care sector and the environment, and Sensory Trust experts on the natural environment and dementia.
