This is a bespoke training course that includes signs from the Makaton Core Vocabulary with the inclusion of music-specific signs obtained from different Makaton Resource Vocabularies.
1000: Welcome and Introductions – 30 mins
1030: Introduction to Makaton – 15 mins
1045: Requirements for effective Makaton Signing – 20 mins
1105: Break – 20 mins
1125: Stage 1 signs – 45 mins
1210: Lunch – 1 hour
1310: Video and Discussion – 15 minutes
1325: Stage 2 signs – 45 mins
1410: Break – 20 mins
1430: Additional signs and Music specific signs – 1 hour
1530: Revision and Questions
This is a basic outline of the day but activities and timings may change on the day to suit individual learner needs and preferences. The sign content however will remain the same or if time and attention permits we may even learn some more.
There will be no writing requirements and the day will be predominantly practical in nature and FUN!
About the trainer:
Originally from Australia, Paul completed his undergraduate degree in Psychology in 1992. Upon graduation Paul worked for the Department of Corrective Services as a Specialist Educator and Trainer. He then moved to various Sydney Area Health Service positions, again working in the field of Training and Research.
In 1995 Paul relocated to London where he began working as a Research Fellow for the University of Portsmouth. After two years Paul completed additional training in Applied Behaviour Analysis and began working as a Behavioural Therapist. Very quickly Paul moved into Supervisory and eventually Consultancy positions within this field. Paul worked primarily as a Special Education Needs and Behavioural Consultant until 2005. During this time Paul completed his PhD in Psychology specialising in Autism Spectrum Disorder.
In 2005 Paul began working at City University London as a Lecturer and later, Senior Lecturer in Psychology. Whilst at City University London Paul held several positions including Professional Components Co-ordinator and Co-Director of the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, BSc Psychology Director, and Research Supervisor. In addition during his time at City, Paul developed, managed and taught on his own programme - Graduate Diploma in Specialist Educational Intervention. During his time at City Paul continued to provide private training and consultancy in the field of special needs, challenging behaviour and Makaton. In addition, in 2008 Paul completed training in Psychological Coaching. Paul has since begun providing Coaching to parents of children with special needs and/or challenging behaviour.
