Live music photography with The XX
Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM (BST)
Hatfield, United Kingdom
This intensive full-day course will cover the techniques you need to capture those mercurial on-stage moments, or tell the story of a band in a single frame. In a group of just eight, you'll work closely with Guardian and Observer photographer David Levene, producing images in the testing environment of this new and exciting festival. From our base in the VIP enclosure, you'll enjoy professional access and get the chance to shoot portraits of The xx and also photograph supporting artists including Solange Knowles and Mount Kimbie in performance. You'll also be tasked with capturing the fans and the atmosphere of the festival under the expert tutelage of Levene.
You'll receive group and one-to-one tutorials, covering essential skills from live photography to band-wrangling. The best work taken on the day will appear on the Masterclasses page of the Guardian website.
If you want to take your work further, for a supplementary fee, you can also receive invaluable advice in a separate three-hour group feedback session on Thursday 27 June. Your pictures of the festival will be analysed, technically and artistically, by Levene to show you how to hone your skills and style for the future.
Your Masterclasses ticket includes VIP access to the festival.
The xx, searched high and low for beautiful locations to stage special, one-off events, and handpicked the artists they most respect and admire to join them. The xx will be joined for the London event by Poliça, Solange, Kindness and Mount Kimbie, who will all be performing live, along side DJ sets from Jamie xx, Benji B and Sampha plus special guests.
David Levene has worked as a photographer for the Guardian since 2001, after graduating from Camberwell College of Art.
