About this event

Community • City & Town

Join local crime and policing historian Adam Wood for an illustrated talk on the history of punishment in Coventry, from the ancient Bridewell where prisoners would lower knitted purses from their cell windows for kind-hearted passers-by to leave alms; the early Police station in the Market Place; and the barbaric whipping of wrongdoers at the cart tail as they slowly trudged through the streets to the Knave's Post.

The venue is the church hall of St John's, feet from the site of the Bridewell itself.
