Liverpool: A Tale of Two Cathedrals, A Bombed Out Church and Time Slips
About this event
Liverpool has its fair share of urban legends, spooky tales and local myths - but perhaps none more puzzling than the 'timeslips' of Bold Street. Over the years, a number of people claim to have 'slipped' into another time period while walking along the city centre street. The city is also blessed with two cathedrals – one Catholic, one Anglican – and as well as contrasting in styles, they are both unique in other ways.
Bohemian, innovative and a foodie's heaven, Bold Street is Liverpool's crown jewel. Let's explore this fabulous street and its stories.
At the top of Bold street we visit St Luke's Church, or the Bombed Out Church, as the locals call it. The church has been given its 'Bombed Out Church' nickname due to the fact it no longer has a roof due to the events of World War 2 and it has been kept like that ever since.
The Anglican Cathedral – known as Liverpool Cathedral – may at first be mistaken for a medieval Gothic masterpiece, but like its Catholic counterpart, it is firmly of the twentieth century and took 74 years to build. It holds many world records and the scale of this 20th-century building can only be appreciated by visiting it. You will discover not only the record-breaking structures but also hidden gems.
At the other end of the only street in the world that may boast a cathedral at either end. The Catholic Cathedral, or Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, to give it its full title, was completed in only 5 years during the 1960s and is still the only circular cathedral in Europe. You can take in the beautiful colours cast onto the marble floor by the largest piece of stained glass in the world!
Bring your camera, sit back and enjoy the adventure!
