The Liverpool String Quartet presents an evening of some the world's finest chamber music for string quartet at Liverpool's beautiful Nordic Church, an intimate octogonal Church with extraordinary acoustics for classical music.
Discover an original piece for String Quartet by the composer of “The Planets”, Gustav Holst.
The programme consists of a hundred year old “new” work, which has never been published. Holst’s "Phantasy on British Folksongs, Op.36" was composed in 1916 and premiered the following year, but Holst withdrew it from his list of compositions soon afterwards. He later regarded the piece as a ‘guilty secret’. The musicologist Roderick Swanston reconstructed the Phantasy.
This Saturday the LSQ will be only the fourth ensemble to play this rare piece in concert in one hundred years.
A copy of the original reconstructed score remains at the British Library.
