Lives in Transition: Supporting Expat Clients Across Life Stages
Overview
Spending time living, studying and working overseas can be an enriching experience; however, expatriate life also presents unique emotional and psychological challenges. Frequent relocations, cultural transitions, disrupted attachments, and repeated cycles of loss can increase the risk of mental health concerns. Discover how a deeper understanding of the emotional landscapes of this globally mobile population can enable you to use best practice in supporting these clients at various stages of their unique cross-cultural journey.
The session will:
· introduce key psychological and emotional insights from childhood through adulthood
· raise awareness of the strengths developed through Expat experiences
· help you develop an understanding of the challenges linked to high mobility
· introduce a therapeutic framework tailored to support globally mobile clients
Why this course is important for you
Supporting highly mobile clients is becoming increasingly relevant for Counsellors, Supervisors, Mental Health and Health Professionals, given that:
· as global mobility continues to rise, increased repatriation means it is more likely that you will encounter expats in a professional capacity
· counsellors working overseas or authorised to provide online services, may come into contact with expats clients
· opportunities for counsellors to work overseas in international schools, universities and communities are growing, providing knowledgeable support is crucial
· the theories that underpin this work, including transition, adjustment, attachment, identity formation and loss are transferable beyond this client group
