Join Holly Jean Buck via ZOOM to hear why ending the fossil fuel industry is our only hope of a liveable climate.

Around the world, countries and companies are setting net-zero carbon emissions targets. But “net-zero” is a term that conveniently obscures multiple futures. There could be a version of net-zero where the fossil fuel industry is still spewing tens of billions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, and has built a corresponding industry in sucking it back out again.

Holly Buck argues that focusing on emissions draws our attention away from where we need to be looking: the point of production. It is time to plan for the end of fossil fuel and the companies that profit from them. Holly’s book addresses and tackles the problems that might arise and also sets out a roadmap that offers opportunities for a more liveable, inclusive future.

Holly Jean Buck is an Assistant Professor of Environment and Sustainability at the University at Buffalo, New York. She writes on emerging technologies in the Anthropocene, with work appearing in numerous journals. She is a faculty fellow with the Forum for Climate Engineering Assessment in Washington, a member of the Steering Committee for the international Climate Engineering Conference in Berlin, and a doctoral researcher at Cornell University, from which she holds a PhD in development sociology. Her first book After Geoengineering: Climate Tragedy, Repair and Restoration explores best and worst-case scenarios for climate intervention.
