About this event
Explore the craft of sumo hairdressing in this special talk and live demonstration presented by sumo commentator Hiro Morita.
Tokoami, a highly skilled tokoyama (sumo hairdresser), reveals the tools, techniques and traditions behind the mage (topknot) styles that define the appearance of every professional sumo wrestler.
In a rare demonstration before a live audience, he creates the elaborate ōichō, the distinctive ginkgo leaf–shaped topknot worn by sekitori-ranked wrestlers during bouts and formal occasions.
Serving as model is rising star Hakuōhō Tetsuya who also shares his personal experiences as a rikishi (wrestler) and speaks about his ambitions for the future.
The discussion concludes with an opportunity for questions from the audience.
This event is part of a series presented with the Japan Sumo Association offering behind-the-scenes insights into the world of sumo and the dedicated professionals who bring the sport to life.
These events coincide with the highly anticipated Grand Sumo Tournament taking place at the Royal Albert Hall in London from 15 to 19 October 2025.
*Please note that filming and / or photography may take place at this event. Photos and footage of the event may then be used to promote Japan House London, helping more people to discover what we offer. If you have any concerns, please contact us online or contact a member of the team on site.
