Living well with hypothyroidism: what to include in your wellness plan
Wed 26 April 2017, 19:00 – 21:00 BST
The thyroid is a tiny gland in the base of the neck that is responsible for the good functioning of your metabolism. Most people won’t need to worry about it, but some will suffer from an underactive thyroid and this will become an issue.
Both men and women are affected, however it is more common in women with 15 in 1,000 being affected in the UK (versus 1 in 1,000 in men).
The main symptoms are usually tiredness, weight gain, depression, sensitivity to cold, dry skin and hair, and/or muscle aches, and a simple blood test ordered by your GP can get confirm a diagnosis of hypothyroidism. The treatment involves then taking a daily hormone for life.
In some cases, this synthetic hormone doesn’t work fully and a naturopathic approach may be beneficial in alleviating the symptoms substantially.
Kate Knowler and Veronica De Angelis, both Nutritional Therapists, will share their experience and explain how having the right nutrition and lifestyle can help when traditional medicine has some limits.
They will cover the following points:
- Understand the importance of your thyroid
- How to take care and feed your thyroid
- Underlying causes of thyroid problems
- How to read your test results, and what they mean for you
- Your options for getting help when you really need it
Plus, there will be a free goodie bag (worth over £10) for the first 30 attendees booked.
Kate Knowler is a registered nutritional therapist with over 10 years of clinic experience supporting and helping those who feel sluggish, stressed and sick to identify their underlying issues and find their vitality once again. Kate writes nutrition articles online for Huffington Post, Thrive, and Yahoo Style, contributed to articles in Women’s Weekly magazine, and been featured in Top Sante magazine and the Irish Examiner newspaper.
Veronica De Angelis is a qualified Nutritional Therapist who specializes in thyroid and autoimmune conditions. She called her clinic Evviva Nutrition to celebrate everyday the immense power of nutrition, as ‘evviva’ means ‘hurrah’ in Italian, as an exclamation of joy, exultation and appreciation.
