LJMU Research & Innovation Celebration Day 2019

Just as The Beatles shook the world with their music, LJMU is shaking the world with its ground-breaking research and innovation. Now is your opportunity to engage with LJMU Researchers at our annual Research and Innovation Celebration Day.

The event will be held in Lecture Theatre 137 in Byrom Street and will provide staff and students alike with the chance to hear about some of the University’s most fascinating research. As well as having the opportunity to talk with the best and brightest researchers from across the University, there will be a battle royal between the contenders of the Vice-Chancellors Awards for the top prize of £2,000 to support their research activity, the winner of which will be decided on the day. Faculty will be pitched against Faculty, but which Faculty will reign supreme? Make sure you come along to watch the presentations, interrogate the shortlisted candidates and hear about the exciting research that is being undertaken at LJMU.

There will also be an opportunity to hear from our post-graduate research community about the different aspects of the PhD Journey and researcher development (there will be short presentations from our PGRs about experiences such as internships abroad, teaching and outreach, conferences, taking part in thesis boot camp, setting up a PGR society, and being a rep). Whether you are a PGR, a supervisor or part of the wider academic community there will be plenty of interesting stories to learn from and listen to.

Attendees will also be able to engage with the poster presenters and vote in our annual “scholarly snaps” competition. The competition is always a popular one which provides researchers with the opportunity to highlight their work in a very visual way which speaks to people at all levels. The aim is to share the wonder and diversity of the University's research activity and show how research makes a real difference in the world. Whether you work in the physical, medical, biological, social sciences, or the arts and humanities we want you to share your work with the wider world.

In the afternoon there will be a keynote talk from the renowned academic commentator Martin McQuillan followed by a Q and A session, allowing us an insight into Martin’s views on the HE landscape as Brexit looms large. Martin is a Scottish-born literary theorist, cultural critic and journalist. He was formerly Professor of Literary Theory and Cultural Analysis and Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Kingston University, London, where he was also Co-Director of The London Graduate School, and from 2015-17 was Kingston’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research, Business and Innovation. He was previously Pro-Dean of Research (2005–09) for the Faculty of Performance, Visual Arts and Communications at the University of Leeds, where he was also Head of the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies (2001–2005). Before that he was a Lecturer in English at Staffordshire University (1997–2000). Since August 2017, he has been the Editor of Research Fortnight's HE publication.
