STEP Lecture Series 2024/2025
Lunchtime Lecture No. 20
Venue: The Colborne Room, OGH Hotel
Time: 12.00 - 13.00
Topic: Fixing the Unfixable? Recent Tax Mistakes, Remedies and Lessons from the UK and Beyond
Speaker: Hugh Gunson and Tom Watts, Charles Russell Speechlys LLP
Tax mistakes happen, but the path to fixing them isn’t always straightforward. In this session, Hugh and Tom will explore recent UK case law and international developments in the law of mistake and rectification that reshape how errors can be corrected and what remedies are available in the courts when things go wrong.
They will look at key decisions and consider what they mean in practice for taxpayers and advisors, and how these might be applicable in Guernsey. From procedural missteps to substantive corrections, Hugh and Tom will cover what works, what doesn’t, and why timing matters more than ever.
Should you wish to raise any questions in advance, please email stepguernsey@step.org so that we may collate and pass over to Hugh and Tom, if appropriate.
PLEASE NOTE: The STEP Guernsey Branch Annual General Meeting will precede the lecture. Please see the notice and agenda below, which will be updated following the deadline for nominations to stand for election to the STEP Guernsey Branch Committee, which is Wednesday 18 June.
