LMA Book Group is a reading group that meets monthly to explore a range of London writing, with a remit covering fiction and non-fiction for all periods in London history.
March’s read is Absolute Beginners by Colin MacInnes
“And as I gazed out on the water like a mouth, a bed, a sister, I though how, my God, I love this city, horrible though it may be, and never ever want to leave it, come what it may send me”
MacInnes recreates the summer of 1958 in this classic novel about teenage life. Set in Notting Hill, the narrator’s obsessions with jazz and fashion explore mod culture in its infancy and shine a light on the lifestyles of one of the first generations of teenagers. However, his teenage years are coming to an end, and this change is part of a plot exploring the simmering tensions that lead to the Notting Hill Riots of the same year.
Although this is part of MacInnes’ London Trilogy, the three novels stand alone and attendees are not expected to read the other titles.
Free - booking essential.
The next book group subject is Up the Junction and Poor Cow by Nell Dunn on Wednesday 12 April.
