Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

The London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) Book Group meets monthly to explore a range of London writing, with a remit covering fiction and non-fiction from all periods in London's history. We dust off old classics, explore new writing, make topical choices and use material from the archives to stimulate lively discussion.

August's read is Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.

This huge bestseller from 2015, which has sold over 20 million copies worldwide, tells the story of Rachel Watkins, an alcoholic in a slow spiral after the break-up of her marriage. Despite losing her job, she still undertakes the long commute to London to keep up appearances, and it is through this commute that she becomes embroiled in the novel’s central drama. This is a taut psychological thriller with a twist, and we will be looking at the use of the commute as a plot device (in this and other writing) and the role of the unreliable narrator.

Readers are encouraged to see last year’s film in which the action is transposed to New York City – how far can the original novel be treated as a London novel?
