Description

We meet monthly to explore a range of London writing, with a remit covering fiction and non-fiction for all periods in London history. A display of archival material relating to the title is provided.

January's read is Linda Grant's The Dark Circle.

Published in November 2016, this is the seventh novel by London writer Linda Grant. It tells the story of two teenage twins from the east end of London, Lenny and Miriam Lynskey, who are beginning to enjoy their post-war freedom when a diagnosis of tuberculosis wrenches them from their city lives to a Kent sanatorium where they are sent to recover. The sanatorium puts them in contact with patients from all corners of British society – now united by the recent formation of the NHS – but their refusal to submit to a punishing treatment regime reflects the wider change in social attitudes that the 1950s bring.

This is a funny but poignant novel, which revels in historical detail. A display of original documents relating to the treatment and prevention of tuberculosis will be provided.
