Event description

Description

London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) Book Group is a monthly reading group exploring a range of London writing, with a remit covering fiction and non-fiction from all periods of London history. A display of material from the archives is available to stimulate discussion.

December’s read is Modern Nature by Derek Jarman.

Derek Jarman (1942-1994) was a film director, writer, stage designer, artist and gardener. In 1986 he discovered he was HIV positive, and found solace in the creation of his now-famous garden at Prospect Cottage, Dungeness. Modern Nature is the first volume of his diaries in which he reflects on his life, his childhood, his career and the lives of a lost generation of gay men in a community depleted by illness and isolated by stigma.

His hectic London life - Jarman had a flat on Charing Cross Road - provides a counterpoint to the meditative rhythms of Prospect Cottage, where Jarman created his garden in the face of an uncertain future.

We will be meeting at 6pm in the Huntley Room at London Metropolitan Archives. The meeting will be until 7pm and a display of archival material will be available to consult until 7.30pm.
