Overview

Join Heritage Schools teachers as they share inspiring local history projects and practical curriculum ideas.

Webinar 2: Photography; Community; Oracy

This is the second of three standalone webinars. You can come to all three or just sign up to the ones that you can attend.

In our ‘3 in 3’ sequence of webinars, teachers from our Champion Heritage Schools will present a range of ideas that have supported their own development, and teaching, of local history, with their students. Based on their own localities, these ideas can be applied to all areas. There are three webinars in this series. The format of each webinar will be three presentations by three different speakers. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask the presenters questions about the practice they share.

The presentations in this webinar are:

1. Through the lens: Our local area; our heritage

Presenter: Sarah Powell

In this presentation, Sarah will focus on how photography can enhance a local heritage walk. Background work can be done beforehand - looking at local photographers, the use of colour, lines, foreground and background. On the walk, children can take digital photos, that can be edited on the spot, taking in the finer details of their local area. This can culminate in a whole school photography competition to elevate the importance of heritage in the curriculum.

2. Engaging the Community in an inclusive local area tour

Presenter: Alisdair Bright

St Cuthbert’s has developed a vibrant local heritage trail that is inspiring our community to reconnect with their neighbourhood. In this session, Alisdair will share how their project was created, how the school collaborated with families and local organisations, and how parent volunteers helped translate the trail into more than 20 languages, to ensure it is accessible to everyone. Discover practical strategies for making heritage learning inclusive, community-driven, and truly representative of the place we all share.

3. Developing oracy through a local heritage study

Presenter: Ashley Gatman

Ashley will provide an overview of how his school has used the area’s local heritage as the focus for their oracy work, as part of their work, using the Voice 21 approach. He will demonstrate how pupils’ key vocabulary, and use of discussion-based command words, such as investigate, build, challenge and clarify, are developed through their local history studies.
