Lockdown Jazz Sessions #21
Event Information
About this event
Welcoming two great ENSEMBLES for Lockdown Jazz Sessions #21!
Lockdown Jazz Sessions are fortnightly gigs performed by musicians from their own homes. Using zoom, the audience has the chance to be present and together at the online gig, even unmuting themselves to applaud.
First Set: Lockheart/Davies/Stringer Trio
The Lockheart/Davies/Stringer trio is comprised of three young musicians: Saxophonist Dan Lockheart, Guitarist Torin Davies, and Bassist Louis Stringer, who are currently studying at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. Inspired by the great tenor led trios of the likes of Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and more recently Walter Smith III, this trio will be bringing an intimate set of music consisting of standards and modern tunes from their home in Birmingham. Expect good vibes from three up and coming musicians on the Birmingham scene.
Second Set: MITYA
MITYA is a co-led duo featuring alto saxophonist Sam Norris (RAM) and pianist Jay Verma (GSMD). Formed in 2016, the pair perform both standard and original music with a focus on creating intricate polyphonic textures, often using simple musical ideas as seeds from which to grow complex improvised forms.
Their unique approach has drawn praise from composer and improvised counterpoint expert Bruno Heinen and they have performed variously throughout the UK, most notably as part of NQ Jazz Digital’s 2020 summer livestream series. Sam and Jay are currently working on a suite of co-written music to be recorded post-lockdown.
