Event description

Description

Work plays a key role in keeping people in good physical and mental health. The Mayor has a duty to produce a strategy to promote the reduction of health inequalities among Londoners and has made healthy work a priority for action. However, programmes that focus on the workplace as a location for tackling health inequality do not yet reach all Londoners. Low paid workers often work in conditions that are challenging for maintaining health and many SMEs find it difficult to provide programmes or conditions that maintain their employees’ health.

The London Assembly Health Committee will hold a conference on 12 February 2018 which will focus on how to improve support for those who are not being reached by current efforts to improve workplace health. Hosted by Dr. Onkar Sahota AM, Chair of the Health Committee, the conference will bring together workers’ representatives and small businesses who can work together to improve the health of Londoners.

1. Key note speakers include:

  • Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive, the RSA

  • Yvonne Doyle, Health Advisor to the Mayor

  • Angela Bartley, Royal Free NHS Foundation Trust

  • Esi Hardy, Managing Director, Celebrating Disability

  • Representation from a union

2. Question and answer session

3. Small group discussions

4. Next steps

5. Lunch and networking

Participants in this half day conference will hear key note speakers from the Health sector, business and workers’ representatives as well as the Mayor’s Health advisor. The agenda will cover current work tackling health inequalities, best practice and gaps in provision. The conference will also feature the results of new research looking specifically at Londoners’ work related health, with a focus on low-paid workers.

Informed by the new research commissioned by the Health committee, group discussions will seek innovative solutions to the current gaps in provision and the conference will highlight key issues that could propel future Mayoral work.

As spaces are limited, please register as soon as possible. The room is wheelchair accessible and we aim to meet all access needs.
