Event description
London Calling: an elsewhere archaeology of the Calais Jungle. Lecture by Louise Fowler, MOLA

About this Event

London Calling: an elsewhere archaeology of the Calais Jungle

Louise Fowler, MOLA

This lecture will present the initial results of work by MOLA and collaborators on a group of objects collected by photographer Gideon Mendel at the site of the Jungle camp in Calais, following its demolition in 2016. The project brings time depth and archaeological insight to a situation that is often framed as a moment of crisis, and challenges some long-held archaeological assumptions.

About the speaker

Louise is a Project Manager on MOLA’s Research and Engagement team. She manages post-excavation work for MOLA’s development-led projects. She also works with clients on exhibitions and displays.

Louise’s archaeological excavation and publication experience covers diverse sites and periods, including the 19th-century burial ground of the London Hospital, a 17th-century stone river wall on the site of Arundel House, riverside development at the site of the medieval Haywharf in the City of London, Middle Saxon settlement at St Martin’s Courtyard in Westminster, and various Roman sites in the City of London.
