Description

The Power of the Particular: Take One Building and 1000 years of History

Particular places, buildings, people and moments in time often provide fascinating starting points for historical enquiry. The Tower of London provides 1000 years of these. This London History Forum will share a range of ideas for building bigger knowledge and understanding through a focus on the particular in history.

Featuring a keynote speech from Michael Riley, Director of the Schools History Project, and workshops from Martin Spafford, Paddy McKeating, Jane Fremantle and Historic Royal Palaces.




Programme

4.00pm - Registration at the Tower of London Welcome Centre. Delegates who arrive early from 4pm will receive a wristband allowing for free entry into the Tower of London.

5.00pm - Meet outside the entrance to the Fusiliers Museum. Delegates will be escorted to the Learning Centre for refreshments and object handling. There will be someone available to pick up any late-comers, but please be aware that the Tower does not allow visitors in after 5.30pm.

5.30pm - Welcome and keynote: Michael Riley (Director, Schools History Project) - The Power of the Particular

6.15pm - Workshop 1
Primary: Shereen Hunte (Historic Royal Palaces) - Take one building: using the Tower of London to shed light on 1000 years of history
Secondary: Martin Spafford - In the shadow of the Tower: migrants, monarchs and movements of the people

7.15pm - Break

7.30pm - Workshop 2
Primary: Jane Fremantle (Whiteheath Junior School) - History made fun while enabling children to get a sense of the past: Chronology and Connections through the Tower of London
Secondary: Paddy McKeating (Pimlico Academy) - The Normans through the eyes of the Tower: Teaching the Normans at GCSE

8.30pm - Close




Booking and cancellation policy

Please note that booking closes on Monday 27 March at 6.00pm. If for any reason you are unable to attend after booking, please notify Maheema Chanrai at maheema.chanrai@history.org.uk.

Please note that we can only refund cancellations requested up to two weeks before the event. After this period, no refunds will be made and full payment required, regardless of attendance.

If for any reason we have to cancel an event, we will of course issue a full refund.
