Shobana Chandrakumar Pillai, simply known as is an Indian film actress and Bharatanatyam dancer from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. She was a popular lead actress in South Indian cinema during the 1980s and 1990s.She won the National Film Award for Best Actress twice, for her performances in the films Manichitrathazhu (1993) and Mitr, My Friend (2001). In 2006, the Government of India honoured with the Padma Shri for her contributions towards the arts. made her début in the Malayalam cinema April 18 (1984). The movie was directed by Balachandra Menon. She acted alongside Mammootty in Kanamarayathu (1984). The same year she entered the Tamil film industry and acted in Enakkul Oruvan directed by S. P. Muthuraman alongside Kamal Haasan. In the subsequent years, she acted in many Tamil films. She acted with Rajinikanthin films like Siva and Thalapathi, the latter being directed by Mani Ratnam became a landmark film in her career.
Shobana was a leading heroine in Telugu film industry as well. won her first National Film Award for Best Actress from the government of India in 1994 for her brilliant performance in Fazil's Manichitrathazhu. She received her second National award for best actress in 2001 for her role in the English language film Mitr, My Friend, directed by Revathi.
Shobana is an accomplished Bharatanatyam dancer. She acted in a number of movies of which majority of them were super hit. Her role as Nagavally in Manichitrathazhu was quite excellent and it was critically acclaimed. was She did her dance training at the Chidambaram academy in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Her guru is the legendary Bharatanatyam dancer Chitra Visweswaran. Shobhana is famed for her Abhinaya, a pivotal element in Bharatanatyam. She performed in Kuala Lumpur before the King and Queen of Malaysia.
She started performing from 1994 onwards, starting from the prestigious Soorya Music & Dance festival . Shobana is well recognised for her performance in the movie Rudra Veena with Chiranjeevi. She was also a part of Mani Ratnam's stage show, Netru, Indru, Naalai. In 1999, She, along with Prabhu Deva and A. R. Rahman performed with a Tamil cinema dancing troupe at the "Michael Jackson and Friends" concert in Munich, Germany.
In 1994, Shobana founded a school for classical Bharatanatyam in Chennai – Kalarpana. The aim of Kalarpana is to organise annual festivals throughout India. This includes performances of nationally and globally known artistes to help raise funds that will be ploughed back into training talented artistes who are financially insecure. Under its umbrella, Kalarpana extends its support to the handicapped and the environmental movement.
When & Where
Established in 2004, Dhruv Arts (DA) is a UK-based not-for-profit South Asian Arts organisation presenting music concerts for the public along with community arts projects. Dhruv has presented 78 live music concerts, 11 dance ballets and 21 arts education projects/ workshops & 55 Dhruv Ensembles [Youth and Children]. Dhruv's last 12 month's activities have attracted a total of over 22,250 live audiences. Dhruv is the host of London International Arts Festival (LIAF), an annual event, this year we will be presenting the 5th edition of the festival. (www.liaf.co.uk)
We have been an excellence centre for South Indian Carnatic music & Indian classical arts. In this regard, we have been conducting annual music examinations since 2007. Our many grass-root and up-stream events in the last 11 years have given live music experience to many younger and wider audiences who otherwise may not have had a chance to experience and be a part of these activities.
