Event description
Dr David Marsh speaks about his research on Nicholas Leate, Jacobean merchant and plant collector.

About this Event

Dr David Marsh, independent researcher

Nicholas Leate (1569-1631) ‘a worthy merchant and a lover of all faire flowers’

Nicholas Leate was a Jacobean merchant and plant collector. He combined involvement in national and civic politics with a love of plants. He was the brains behind Moorfields, and was a friend of Gerard and Parkinson supplying both with new plants. His story serves as a good example of how garden history fits into the wider social and cultural context.
