London LGBTQ Learning Network: intersections

Tuesday 30 July 3.45pm to 9pm

Please book by Tuesday 23 July 2013

British Sign Language Interpretation and audio description provided

Aim: This event will create a space for fresh engagement, new thinking and debate around intersectionality*, equality and diversity in relation to organising and activism, and celebrate everyone’s participation in the London LGBTQ Learning Network since it was launched in 2010.  This is the final Learning Network event that will be funded by the original Big Lottery funded In Our Name project.  The event will be chaired by Marai Larasi, Director of Imkaan, and will bring diverse contributors including activists, organisers, academics and artists together around intersectionality, with presentations, performance and multimedia contributions.

 * intersectionality is a concept used to describe how oppressive institutions (racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, classism, etc.) are interconnected; also ‘it seems to be true that centres of creativity tend to be at the intersection…where beliefs, lifestyles and knowledge mingle and allow individuals to see new combinations of ideas with greater ease’ (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi)

Please note that if the event becomes oversubscribed, centred may have to limit the number of places available to representatives of one organisation.

Access and expenses: Travel expenses and support costs are available for disabled participants (travel £20; support needs please contact). Bursaries of £50 are available to organisations with no paid staff up to a maximum of eight bursaries. These must be claimed no later than one month after the event.

Who the event is for: This event is for diverse LGBTQ and equalities organisations, artists, organisers, volunteers, activists, funders and infrastructure organisations.

Venue: Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, Holborn, London WC1R 4RL

Our main activities include: publishing, community events, networking, volunteering, LGBTQ history and heritage activities, and community infrastructure.

Our work focuses on diverse LGBTQ experiences, especially where these issues intersect with experiences concerning race, gender, disability, deafness, age and minority faith. We work closely with friends, family and allies who also wish to achieve equality for all.
