From ‘a Paradise of pleasant Flowers’… to ‘a world of profitable Plants’: Botanical drawings in the Royal Collection
The Royal Collection includes an important group of flower drawings, which range from decorative still life designs to careful botanical studies. Ranging in date from the sixteenth century to the twentieth, and including examples by Leonardo da Vinci, Alexander Marshal and Maria Sibylla Merian, these drawings are testament to the interest of both artists and royal collectors in the world around them. This talk will discuss the development of the collection and examine some of its highlights.
Kate Heard is Senior Curator of Prints and Drawings, Royal Collection Trust. Her exhibitions include Maria Merian’s Butterflies which was held at The Queen’s Galleries in London and Edinburgh in 2016 and 2017.
