The upcoming wide introduction of more hazardous alternative fuels could challenge the safety performance of the maritime industry. Safety Management Systems need to be strengthened to adequately account for the new risks from hazardous alternative fuels. A systematic approach is needed to prepare the shipping organisation and the personnel in time to enable safe operation and competence readiness.
