About this event

Step back in time with Sam Cullen, author and expert onLondon’s cultural heritage, as he brings the city’s lost pubs into sharp focus. Through richly illustrated anecdotes and meticulously researched narratives, you'll encounter over 200 pubs that once served as vibrant hubs of community, culture, creativity—and even controversy.

From a pub with a secret garden swimming pool to one that hosted early punk gigs and legendary literary figures, each location tells a distinct story ofLondon's changing landscape, its social fabric, and the places that helped shape it. Cullen shares quirky trivia, architectural highlights, and poignant reflections that underline the significance of preserving our urban past. His style is witty, nostalgic, and deeply informative—ideal for historians, pub aficionados, and anyone curious aboutLondon’s evolving cultural map.

About the speakers:

Sam Cullen grew up in Brighton but has lived in London for nearly twenty years. He has a passionate interest in London's pubs and their history. During the 2010s he wrote a blog called Innside track where he looked for the best pub near every London Underground station. He has previously written about pubs for both Londonist and Time Out, contributing to the Londonist Mapped and Londonist Drinks books. In 2022 he co-authored What's in a London Pub Name? with his good friend James Potts.

For over a decade, Tori Bishop-Rowe has called London home, immersing herself in the city's vibrant communities. Tori's passion for inspiring positive change and advocating with communities has driven her to bring people together to enjoy the many unique pubs across the capital. As the former London Young Members Regional Coordinator for the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), Tori's love for London's pubs is centred on their role at the heart of the city's neighbourhoods, where stories are shared and friendships are forged.
