Event description
London's Magnificent Seven Cemeteries: An Introduction - CAROLINE SWAN explores the fascinating history of London's first garden cemeteries

About this event

This event will take place via Zoom, with details emailed to all attendees nearer the event.

London's "Magnificent Seven" are the capital's first garden cemeteries, opened in the early part of the 19th Century to provide a new kind of burial space for Londoners - spacious, landscaped and dignified. These beautiful spaces have become the final resting place for Londoners of all backgrounds, nationalities and creeds.

The story of the Magnificent Seven will take you on a rollercoaster ride through history, from the horrors of London's overflowing urban churchyards to the heights of Victorian funerary architecture, and from bankruptcy and bombing through to modern havens for wildlife and education. Along the way we'll learn about the influences and attitudes that shaped these extraordinary cemeteries and how they remain a vital and vibrant part of London's history and environment today.

This fully-illustrated virtual talk will be presented by CAROLINE SWAN, author of the Flickering Lamps blog and a qualified Clerkenwell and Islington Guide.
