This workshop will provide you with the knowledge in

  • Common indications for long term feeding enteral feeding including the differences between gastric and jejunal feeding.
  • Overview of the assessment process for patients referred for long term feeding.
  • PEG and RIG tube insertion processes.
  • Contraindications for long term enteral feeding tube insertion.
  • Post procedural and long term complications.

and skills

  • How to identify different types of enteral feeding tubes.
  • Carrying out routine care for specific tube types.
  • How to carry out routine balloon gastrostomy tube replacement.
  • How to assess and manage unplanned and/or traumatic tube displacement.

The workshop combines theoretical and practical learning.

You will also be invited to shadow the Nutrition Nurses at a later date to observe and put into practice the things you have learnt during this session. This can lead to being signed off as competent in gastrostomy tube care.
